JOB SUMMARY:
This job requires managing the operations of the Virtual Construction department with production supervisors for sheet metal, mechanical piping, and plumbing on all projects requiring the production of shop drawings, building information models (BIM), and fabrication services.  This shall be done following the overall company objectives and goals.   Duties include but are not limited to providing direction for the virtual construction platform at McKenney’s, identifying and deploying technology and software to increase efficiency and productivity, implementing consistent processes, and primary interface to the other areas of our business including Operations, Logistics, fabrication shops, etc.  Interactions with Business unit leaders, Project Managers, Field Foremen, General Contractors, trade subcontractors as well as others will be required.

KEY PERFORMANCE METRICS

  • Project Budget Compliance (P/R): Compliance to project budgets for Virtual Construction activities.
  • Department Budget Compliance: Ensure department overhead costs are balanced and within budget.
  • On-Time Production: Deliver drawings and necessary project files on time >90% of the time.
  • Quality Rework Rate: Reduce both the frequency and average cost of Virtual Construction-related rework events.
  • Modeled Cost Compliance with Estimate: Ensure models are developed economically to redeem project estimates.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Develop and implement strategies for the group to achieve long-term goals and objectives in internal process improvement, quality, and execution.
  • Provide leadership in driving each project team to fabricate and pre-assemble in support of the company goal to operate more as a manufacturer than a contractor.
  • Set department budget to fulfil company goals and manage overhead costs to budget.
  • Ensure best practices are captured and shared among all team members.  Possess a focus on LEAN Production.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including Project Managers, Profit Center Managers, and other senior leaders, to communicate direction, coordinate processes, and obtain feedback.
  • Lead design managers to measure and improve drawing quality and productivity.
  • Oversee the development of documentation of standards and ensure they are adhered to across your team.
  • Maintain and improve programs to on-board new team members.
  • Ensure consistent adoption and execution of quantity tracking throughout the Virtual Construction department on all construction projects.
  • Research and identify software solutions that can increase the efficiency and productivity of the department. Evaluate the potential benefits and drawbacks of each solution, develop a comprehensive business case including return on investment (ROI), and select the most suitable option.
  • Identify and develop the avenues and sources for acquiring new detailers, and designers for your team. 
  • Manage the deployment and adoption of new tools across the team to support corporate initiatives (PMConnect, similar).
  • Conduct annual Coaching Sessions with each direct report and participate in coaching sessions for other key members of the department as needed.
  • Ensure short-term and long-term labor forecasts are updated regularly and accurately reflect upcoming workload.  Ensure labor is available for the business to grow successfully.
  • Lead the strategic implementation of emerging construction technology in the business.
  • Act as the company representative for BIM expertise in our market. Participate in contract reviews for scope and terms and conditions related to virtual construction.
  • Develop Professional Development Plans for each member of your team and update quarterly.
  • Perform additional assignments per supervisor’s direction in accordance with department and company goals.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology or building construction
  • Project management or BIM management experience in the mechanical and plumbing industry
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in the construction industry
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in providing direct leadership of teams
  • Must have basic PC experience in Windows environments, working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, Web-enabled applications, and database software
  • Previous experience managing multiple projects at the same time

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics
  • Experience with Autodesk Construction Cloud
  • Experience with Autodesk Revit

  • Strong focus on driving processes and execution and the ability to nurture an environment of accountability.
  • Must be a self-starter with ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Maintain a strong attention to detail and ability to successfully prioritize company drafting needs to maximize company profitability
  • Strong leadership and management skills, team-oriented and able to respond quickly to changing customer demands.
  • Ability to effectively communicate across a diverse group of people (PMs, drafting, field staff, fabrication shops, etc.) and develop clarity of direction among these groups.
  • Solid reasoning, math, science, and technical skills.
  • Ability to use time productively, maximize efficiency, and meet challenging work goals
  • Ability to take on additional responsibilities as needed as well as determine and manage priorities with minimal guidance.
  • Must possess and maintain exceptional work ethic as well as uphold company values and demand the highest standard of conduct from self and others

  • Work will be performed both in a normal office environment
  • Limited exposure to physical risks
  • Limited physical effort will be required
